Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Deep skillet or frying pan
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water or milk, for a richer dough
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or melted shortening, for a tender texture
  • Oil for frying vegetable or canola oil

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Dough
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the warm water and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients.
  • Stir with a spoon or your hands until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour until it’s soft but not sticky.
  • Step 2: Let the Dough Rest
  • Cover the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes. This helps create a tender frybread.
  • Step 3: Divide and Shape the Dough
  • After resting, divide the dough into 6-8 equal pieces, depending on the size of frybread you want.
  • Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten with a rolling pin to about 1/4-inch thickness. You can also use your hands to stretch each piece. Make a small hole in the center to prevent it from puffing too much while frying.
  • Step 4: Heat the Oil
  • Pour about 1 inch of oil into a deep skillet or frying pan and heat over medium-high heat until it reaches around 350°F (175°C). You can test by placing a small piece of dough in the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the top.
  • Step 5: Fry the Dough
  • Carefully place one piece of dough into the hot oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the frybread from the oil, and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • Repeat with the remaining dough pieces.
  • Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
  • Serve warm with savory toppings like ground beef, lettuce, and cheese for Indian tacos, or drizzle with honey and sprinkle with powdered sugar for a sweet treat.

Notes

  • Alternative Flour: For a gluten-free version, try substituting with a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
  • Add a Flavor Twist: For added flavor, try mixing in 1 tsp of cinnamon for a sweet version or a pinch of garlic powder for a savory version.
  • Keep it Warm: If making multiple pieces, keep them warm in a low oven (around 200°F) until ready to serve.
  • Storage: Frybread is best eaten fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 1 day. Reheat in a warm oven to regain its crispness.
