Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Deep frying pan or pot
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons

Ingredients

  • 4 medium apples such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, peeled and cut into fry-like sticks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • Oil for frying vegetable or canola oil

For Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • For Dipping Sauce Optional:
  • Caramel sauce or whipped cream

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Cinnamon Sugar Coating
  • In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 cup of sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon for the coating. Set aside.
  • Step 2: Heat the Oil
  • Pour oil into a deep frying pan or pot, filling it about 2 inches deep. Heat the oil to around 350°F (175°C).
  • Step 3: Make the Batter
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt.
  • Gradually add the milk to the dry ingredients, whisking until a smooth, thick batter forms.
  • Step 4: Coat the Apple Fries
  • Working in batches, dip the apple slices into the batter, ensuring they’re fully coated.
  • Step 5: Fry the Apple Fries
  • Carefully place the coated apple slices into the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown, turning them as needed for even cooking.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the apple fries from the oil, and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil.
  • Step 6: Toss in Cinnamon Sugar
  • While the apple fries are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
  • Step 7: Serve
  • Serve the apple fries warm with caramel sauce or whipped cream for dipping.

Notes

  • Best Apples to Use: Tart apples like Granny Smith hold their shape well and add a nice contrast to the sweet coating.
  • Alternative Coatings: Try rolling the apple fries in powdered sugar or a mixture of cinnamon and brown sugar for a different flavor.
  • Storage: Apple fries are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 1 day. Reheat in an oven or air fryer to regain some crispiness.
  • Make it Healthier: For a lighter option, try baking or air frying the coated apple slices at 375°F for about 15 minutes, flipping halfway through.
