- 4 slices of ciabatta baguette, or your favorite bread
- 1 large ripe tomato sliced
- 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese sliced
- Fresh basil leaves
- 2 tbsp balsamic glaze or balsamic vinegar
- 1-2 tbsp olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Prepare the ingredients:
Slice the bread into thick pieces. If using a baguette, you may slice it diagonally for a more appealing presentation.
Layer the sandwich:
On two slices of bread, layer the sliced tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. Add fresh basil leaves on top. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Assemble the sandwich:
Top with the remaining slices of bread to complete the sandwich.
Optional grilling:
If desired, you can grill the sandwiches using a sandwich press or a skillet. If using a skillet, place a heavy pan on top of the sandwiches to press them down while cooking over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side until the bread is golden and the cheese is slightly melted.
Serve:
Cut the sandwiches in half and serve immediately. Drizzle with additional balsamic glaze if desired.
- Feel free to add sliced avocado or pesto for extra flavor.
- For a heartier sandwich, add grilled chicken or turkey.
- This sandwich is best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day.
